In India, after Agriculture, Textile Industry has generated the largest employment for both skilled and unskilled labor.

India’s textile industry contributes about 27% of its total foreign exchange and the textile production is about 14% of the total industrial production and around 3% of the total GDP (Gross Domestic Production).There has been increase in India's share of global textile trading to seven percent in five years.

India is the second largest producer of natural cotton fiber in the world next to United Kingdom and thus more than 50% of India s textile is cotton based. The other major fibers are silk, wool, jute and man-made fibers. Textile industry involves the three major processes in manufacturing the cloth involves spinning, which is the conversion of raw cotton into yarn, weaving, conversion of yarn into fabric and dyeing, adding color to the fabrics.

In India, Spinning has reached almost the saturation level and Government of India is supporting Weaving sectors for more new projects to compete with global competition like subsidy for advanced machineries and tax benefits.
